Help for Struggling Readers
What HAPPY Reading Has for Me
There is no single reason some readers struggle to improve, and there is not a single reason to give up the expectation that your learner CAN improve. Teacher and author Donalyn Miller (The Book Whisperer) calls struggling readers “developing readers”. To help them along their developmental path, we suggest virtually everything this website has to offer and many other wonderful resources not found on these virtual pages.
In general, HAPPY Reading recommends a generous amount of reading aloud… no matter the age of your reader. Shared reading is helpful for so many reasons… modeling fluency, enriching vocabulary, increasing background knowledge about many things, and demonstrating that reading is an enjoyable way to spend time… these are just a few of the reasons to read aloud.
We also suggest that your learner(s) have many opportunities to read text that is not too difficult. Reading both silently and aloud at the just-right level will improve confidence, increase fluency and broaden word knowledge. Please give our reader’s theater scripts a try… selecting levels that are at or below your learner(s)’ independent comfort zone. Repeated readings may produce a newly-committed reader, based on the fun factor, alone. To sample our instructional poems and reader’s theater scripts, go to: http://www.happyreading.org/InstructionalLibrary.html
The FREE samples are our gift to you. We hope that you’ll enjoy them with your learners. You will have access to all the poems and scripts in our library, which grows each month, when you become a registered member of HAPPY Reading.
