Motivation
Including for Struggling Readers
What HAPPY Reading Has for Me

People improve at what they do repeatedly. People do what they like. Creating an inner drive towards books and reading will serve learners well on their journey to becoming life-long readers, productive citizens and successful people who are HAPPY. We help them to discover and uncover that inner motivation by thinking outside the book.

Not everything in life is intended to be fun. Why not?

Our poems and reader’s theater scripts are created with all the important, best practice, foundational elements in place AND they’re meant to be a little bit whimsical and a little bit (or a lot) fun. They’re also designed to increase in difficulty (leveled reading) so that students experience success at each reading stage before moving to the next, slightly more challenging level.

Reader’s theater scripts have the added attraction of creating pleasant, social interaction and allowing learners to shine before their peers. Talk about a plan for success! And who isn’t motivated by success?

Not everything in life is intended to be fun, but HAPPY reading is.

To access FREE samples of our poems and scripts:

Limited access to free scripts is available to ALL HAPPY guests. We hope you’ll use and enjoy the free samples liberally, to the great success of your learners. To access the full library, you must pay to become a registered member.

Books
HAPPY is pleased to recommend a wide assortment of books that make great read-alouds. Virtually every learner, including struggling readers, consider hearing engaging books read aloud to be an A+ activity. Some of the books are classic, some new, some tried-and-true with readers and audiences. All our picture book, early chapter and easy reader picks come with some sort of instructional suggestion… usually related to word study. When instruction flows naturally from stories, from games, or from other enjoyable pursuits, motivation is piqued.

With many years of experience reading aloud to people of every age and background (remember that our founder is also a broadcaster), we are well-equipped to select books with language that is musical, plots that are intriguing, and characters that elicit a response. When learners hear good stories read aloud, they are able to build background knowledge and reflect on fluent reading without having to risk revealing what they don’t know…without the possibility of being embarrassed. Reading aloud brings them into a community of readers and paves the way for them to want to read more independently.

For your convenience, you can buy books through the site by clicking on the icon for the store you wish to use, Amazon, Better World Books or Powell’s. All financial transactions are handled by these reputable retailers. You may also click to find books in your nearest, local library by using the WorldCat links. Shared reading among young learners gives them a significant advantage in becoming skilled readers. And we believe it is NEVER too late to read aloud with learners of any age. As C.S. Lewis said, “No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally (and often far more) worth reading at the age of fifty.” Find Books at http://happyreading.org/Books.htm
