What HAPPY Reading Has for Me

How may we help you?

One of the best ways to get kids reading is to make it social. Where is there a better place for reading socially than at the library? Children and families who are already strong readers and learners are likely to be the ones who already frequent the library. What about those who can get there but who haven’t found a reason to choose to get there?

Clubs can be the answer. A poetry club or a reader’s theater club can be the ideal way to come together for reading. With appropriate material, such as the leveled poems and scripts on the HAPPY Reading site, even the newest readers can participate. One site license covers a library or community organization’s usage for up to 40 participants in a club for one year. And as the popularity grows, it’s not much more to add to the coverage.

Imagine a community night when young performers come together and read aloud from poems and short scripts they’ve rehearsed many times. Children who may not have considered themselves readers before can acquire a magnificent sense of accomplishment reading successfully before family, friends and community.

Reader’s theater and poetry clubs can be the perfect extension activity for after-school groups and gatherings, such as those already meeting for homework help. Groups can be differentiated by age or grade, with each performing material suited for their development and interests. Existing scripts, such as those on our site, can be a valuable reinforcement for schools… underscoring the content objectives learners already have in the classroom. They can be used for practice, for performance or both… and can be a fun way of working on reading skill while getting to spend time with friends.

Most of the first materials on the site are short scripts tied closely to content standards. New material is introduced every month, and eventually, scripts will include variations on fairy tales, classic stories and much more. Here is a hands-on, engaging way to broaden learners’ literacy skills (a goal of most libraries) AND their literary repertoire at once.

Help them to read more fluently. Remind them again and again that reading is enjoyable. Allow them to practice reading at levels of success and then to shine as stars before an audience. What could be better for children of any age or for adults who are polishing their reading skills?

Collaborate with community groups or with schools as a partnered project, but bring them into the library. Read, repeat, reap the benefits of a simple but superb way to reach out to the community and fulfill the library’s mission.
