Homeless Programming
What HAPPY Reading Has for Me

How can literacy help those who are homeless?

Reading can be the beginning of something wonderful for those experiencing homelessness or it can be the continuation of the best part of what was.

In working with homeless children and families over the years, many have shared that the hardest part of leaving their old lives behind was losing beloved items… like favorite books. Gifting those well-loved books or sharing stories aloud can be so very healing for those who have experienced the trauma of life disrupted, sometimes violently. The problems introduced in stories and the creativity of the characters in solving them can provide insight, hope and resilience when it is most needed.

Sometimes, the life challenges that led to homelessness are also challenges that meant parents weren’t involved or that families weren’t bonded successfully. The right books can help. Training for parents in how to be literacy role models and capable tutors for their own children is family-affirming and sometimes life-altering in all the best ways.

Whether in an emergency shelter or a long-term, transitional facility, there is a role for literacy in helping people to conquer their challenges and look to the future with courage.
