Higher Order Thinking
Including Critical Thinking Skills
What HAPPY Reading Has for Me
Higher thoughts, deeper thinking-- however you characterize it, this is at a premium in today’s world. According to many, the ability to think and to communicate beyond the superficial, beyond mere recitation of facts and figures, beyond acquiescing to perpetual following... and instead aspiring to uncommon leadership when needed… these modes of thinking and behaving will be even more essential for success in the future. Our emphasis on establishing solid reading skills and reading both widely and deeply are geared towards development of higher order thinking. And the activities we suggest (coming September 2011), which are reserved for registered members only, have the same aim. We’d like to direction your attention specifically to the following:
As a HAPPY visitor:
Coming in the fall of 2011, books recommended as read-alouds by HAPPY will have a HOT (Higher Order Thinking) Card available for purchase through the website. These can be purchased by any guest, but registered members receive discounted pricing.
As a registered member:
Content Area Reading and Writing Practice
Coming in the fall of 2011, each of our reader’s theater scripts will connect with activities for reading and writing practice and for the development of higher order thinking skills. These activities will be available for members only.
As you review the Detail page for each RT script, you see a place for three types of activities—
1) Picture, Prose and Poetry
2) How Do You Know?
3) What If
Instructional activities under each of these headings will prompt thinking, writing, discussion and further reading related to the standard and/or content area addressed in that particular RT script. It is the fervent desire of HAPPY to create more reasons for learners to engage in motivated, authentic, focused reading and writing and to spend less time on activities that may not serve them academically quite as well. Our suggested activities will span the continuum of the new Bloom’s taxonomy (affectionately known as Bloom 2.0)… from remembering to creating, with an emphasis on the upper regions.
Only members have access to these activities which complement content area learning. You may register to become a member here: http://happyreading.org/Register.aspx
